Solar tracking devices, mounted with photovoltaic (PV) panels, allow the panels to exactly track the sun's path across the sky and can increase the yield of solar energy installations by as much as 40 percent compared to stationary panels. Solar trackers have been around since about 1980, but their increasing use in both commercial-scale and residential solar energy projects is a direct result of proven, improved solar capture efficiencies. This increase, though largely driven by commercial-scale solar energy installations, has translated into lower costs and more reliable tracking systems for homeowners and small businesses as well.

How Solar Tracking Systems Work

Solar power systems are an investment both financially and environmentally. A PV system will save money on electricity and ensure a greener future. The one drawback with solar is that most system are fixed whereas the sun is continually changing positions in the sky. However, with the use of solar tracking systems this loss of energy can be largely mitigated.

But what are solar tracking systems? Put simply, these systems when applied to photovoltaic power kits track the sun, and cause the panels to rotate to receive sunlight for as long a possible. This increases your power output by as far as 30 to 50%, though the amount can be significantly less than that depending on the photovoltaic tracking system you use and your location. Of course this energy generated does not take into account the amount of power the tracking system itself uses, but it's minuscule compared to the additional power you'll be gathering from your sun-powered home kit. There are also power-less systems that use gas-filled tubes to move the trackers.

Intelligent Sun-Tracking System for Efficiency Maximization of Photovoltaic Energy Production
Abstract.
This paper focuses on the optimization of the electric energy production by photovoltaic cells through the development of an intelligent sun-tracking system. The developed tracking system is innovative in relation to the usual sun tracking systems available in the market. In fact, the developed solution has many advantages in relation to similar existing devices, as this system is autonomous regarding the information needed to process the optimal orientation and is intelligent in a way that it performs on-line monitoring of the photovoltaic energy production.

An experimental prototype was built and field results have proven the good performance of the developed tracking system.Overall System Presentation
The overall system is presented in fig. 1. The complete
strategy is composed by 5 sub-systems: 1) Electro-
Mechanical Structure; 2) Control Unit; 3) Supervisory
System; 4) Wind-meter; 5) Photovoltaic Park.

Sun Tracker Working

We set out to build a solar tracker.
The tracker uses two Nema 23 bipolar stepper motors to rotate 2 photovoltaic cells around the altitude and azimuth axes. We have three tracking algorithms to track the sun. The first moves the PV panel in little squares in spherical coordinates, finds the point on the square with the best voltage, and moves there, then starts over. The second moves in a little square, finds the voltage gradient, and uses that to decide where to move. The third uses the second strategy to find 5 or 6 good points spread 1hour apart, uses a multivariable, nonlinear, least-squares fit to find its latitude, the day of the year, the time of day, and then predicts where the sun will be next. It will use this equation for a few repositions, and then check to make sure it’s right using the second algorithm. In moving the PV panel, our stepper motors ramp up to speed in order to prevent overshoot and jerk/rattling.

Easy Make Sun Tracker by LEGO
